There’s been plenty of one-shoulder dresses over the past few seasons. But if you think asymmetric starts and ends with a pretty cocktail frock then think again, as daywear is also about to get a pleasant shake-up with mismatched lengths.

Looking to BCBG Max Azria (who himself has done plenty of asymmetrical necklines for the infamous Herve Leger bandage dress), midi-length dresses have been made interesting by folds and ruches of fabric around the hem. For the Autumn collection, Max Azria has interpreted the need for layering in a unique way; there’s grey panels on beige cotton and vice versa, as the trend for well constructed basics continues.

And construction is on Louise Goldin’s mind, too. In another standout vote for asymmetrical fashion, Goldin has developed clothes complete with structured fixtures and fittings. As well as pockets and scaffolds, layers have been added to dresses and coats which create an off balance geometry- once again, at the lower half of the item.

It’s easy to recreate the effect of asymmetric hemlines on tops, skirts, dresses and even jackets. Using neutral colours we’ve taken these catwalk vibes as a starting point, ready to approach our wardrobes in a more off kilter fashion.
